Research on Recognition of Voluntary Activity, Self Esteem, Social Welfare Ideology of College Students

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the recognition of voluntary activity, self esteem and social welfare ideology of college students. The subjects for this study were 166 students majoring in cosmetology of ¡¯D¡¯ Health college located in Gyeonggi-Do. The data were collected from May 6 to 16, 2003, by questionnaire and analysed by frequency, percent, t-test, ANOVA, Sheffe, Pearson correlation coefficient, Cronbach¡¯s a using SPSS/ WIN program. The analysed results of this study are as follows. 1. The subjects who had experienced voluntary activities were 69.3%. Voluntary mentality was affected by ¡¯school education¡¯(27.1£¥). The subjects who answered ¡¯they would like to¡¯ were 77.8£¥, if they might have some opportunities to participate in voluntary activities. But the subjects who answered ¡¯not need¡¯ about the institutionalization of voluntary activities were 63.3%. 2. The level of self-esteem was above average(mean score 3.88, range 2.80-4.90). The level of social welfare ideology was above average(mean score 3.89, range 2.09-4.91). 3. There were significant differences in degree of self-esteem according to the degree of satisfaction with (college life) (F=4.563, p=.004), the need to participate in voluntary activities(F=2.72, p=.046). There were significant differences in degree of social welfare ideology according to the need to participate in voluntary activities(F=5.91. p=.001), the need for institutionalization of voluntary activities(t=3.25, p=.001).
